Project Homeless Connect brings over 50 agencies together to provide services to people experiencing homelessness in Calgary

April 25, 2008

CALGARY, Alberta (April 25th, 2008) – On Saturday, April 26th, 2008, the Calgary Homeless Foundation will host Project Homeless Connect, fulfilling one of the recommendations within the 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness. Project Homeless Connect will bring together over 50 local service agencies and organizations and more than 100 volunteers at the TELUS Convention Centre, to deliver services to over 500 homeless individuals in Calgary.

“We know that access to services, supports and the housing necessary to ending homelessness is one of the biggest challenges these people face,” says Tim Richter, President & CEO of the Calgary Homeless Foundation. “Project Homeless Connect will enable as many services and supports to come together under one roof, each providing on site service that will make it easier for individuals experiencing homelessness to get the help they want and need.”

Calgary’s Project Homeless Connect is based on a model currently being used by over 130 cities around the world. On April 26th, participants will have on-site access to services including medical treatment, counseling, housing, obtaining new identification documents, access to income support, employment opportunities, comfort kits containing personal items, hair cuts, hot meals, clothing and much more.

“Project Homeless Connect not only provides direct services to individuals, it is also a catalyst for community involvement,” says Richter. “This project has engaged people who have otherwise never been involved in homelessness before, and their contribution will make a significant difference in a small amount of time.”

As part of the 10 Year Plan, the Calgary Homeless Foundation plans to host Project Homeless Connect on a quarterly basis. Seed funding for Project Homeless Connect was provided by the Government of Alberta through the Community Initiatives Program.
